How Controlling Values Work in Everyday Life

Controlling values are what govern our individual and group worldviews. They describe our ideas and maxims that dictate how we approach problems in society. The basis for which we set up controlling values are as simple as problems and solutions.

Cyberbullying is a tricky issue to tackle with regard to controlling values because of the emotions involved with them. My group and our professor developed this network in class that we believe accurately describes the actions and reactions that happens when we hear about yet another suicide in the news caused by some form of bullying. As you can see, while everyone might agree that harassing people online, especially teens, is a horrible thing to do, there are argument that suggest that keeping the bullies in check is a restriction on their digital  freedom and hence their lives.

Lots of gray area, basically.

Controlling Values on Parental Monitoring

An efficient way for parents to prevent cyber bullying with their child is to keep an attentive watch over the time the child spends on the computer and having an idea as the who they are chatting with if they are having an online conversation. While parental supervision is an effective counter to the chances of cyber harassment it may also ironically increase the chances of bullying.
Say that the child in question is more along the lines of being a teenager, having prominent parental supervision may be something unpleasant to the teen. To dodge the constant supervision, the teen may start to spend time on the computer secretly that will make any harassment occurring afterwards unknown to the parents. It's important for the parents to have an idea of what their child thinks about cyber bullying and the importanct of it's prevention so if parental supervision and internet monitoring become a definite strategem then the parents and children should be equally understanding.
